Subject: Michigan Shorty Story
The suburban house I grew up in was in Dearborn, Michigan. My family was the second owner; the first owner lived there less than one year before us in the brand-new house, built in 1951.
I had seen shadow people in that house four or five times growing up in the 1960’s and 1970’s, always the same situation: I was in bed, had just awoken early in the morning, and a very dark, male figure (no hat or coat) stood motionless and featureless at the foot of my bed. It disappeared quickly and completely after I shut my eyes and brought the covers up over my head, and then looked again.
The last time this happened in that house I was in my early 20’s (early 1980’s) and going to college in Detroit. My room was in the basement. I had blacked out the windows for privacy, to block cold air drafts, and I slept better in pitch darkness. One night I woke up with a start. The shadow person was standing at the foot of my bed as always, a featureless, two-dimensional male figure of the deepest opaque black, clearly visible against the very dark basement almost completely devoid of light. As always, the figure was not menacing, it stood completely still, and was silent, as if simply observing me. My sense was that even though featureless and without eyes, it was looking directly at me, head tilted down slightly, definitely not facing away from me.
I was alarmed and terrified looking at it, and after maybe three seconds I yelled while instinctively kicking my legs up at it. I reached to turn on the bedside light and it was instantly gone. I loudly called over my dog Trinity, a black Lab, and she sleepily, reluctantly complied. She wasn’t alert, agitated or nervous so in my opinion she had no sense that something was there just a few seconds ago, even though she was laying only ten feet from my bed.
Many years later, before my parents passed away in 2006, I told this story to my mother for the first time. She then revealed that she had seen a shadow person under identical circumstances several times during the 40 or so years she lived there, but both of us agreed that neither had ever again seen one in any subsequent house/apartment. Finally, an old friend talked to me a few years ago. Her family of five had stayed in our house for a couple of weeks in the mid-1960’s while we were on vacation and their home was being renovated. She didn’t mention seeing a shadow person but did say the she felt “creeped out” while in the house and she felt like something, or someone, was watching her.
My suspicion is that the shadow person had a connection to the prior owner (who was and is unknown to me), or possibly to the indigenous inhabitants of that part of what became known as Michigan. Of course, this is only a hunch.
